In 1953, a group of young actors bought a dilapidated Hanover Tavern with the idea of raising their families in the building and conducting theatre performances in the basement. They began to repair the building and construct the theatre. Their efforts of early adaptive re-use saved the Tavern from possible destruction.
This was the humble beginning of Barksdale Theatre, now recognized as our country's oldest dinner theatre. For generations of Central Virginians, Hanover Tavern and Barksdale Theatre were synonymous, tied together by history. In 1990, the building was purchased by the Hanover Tavern Foundation with the goal to restore and protect the structure. Theatre continued until 1996, when a major restoration of the Tavern moved Barksdale to its new home in the Willow Lawn section of Richmond.
The restoration of the Tavern and basement theatre were completed in 2005. Barksdale Theatre returned in 2006 and continues to conduct numerous plays each year in the Tavern Theatre. Barksdale is a valued partner with Hanover Tavern and we urge all to join us for a great night of food, drink, and entertainment.
