Speaker Series: Captain John Smith: First Cartographer of Virginia
In the Arch Room 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.$3 suggested donation. David Williams, local map expert and collector, will discuss the earliest map of Virginia and its derivatives, all produced in the 17th Century. In 1607, Captain John Smith explored the Chesapeake Bay and created the first detailed map. Over the next years, 10 updated versions of the map were issued. Mr. Williams will present these maps as well as additional early Virginia maps.

Join Dr. Edward Ayers, President of the University of Richmond, as he discusses ways to see the Civil War in a new light, showing that it remains interesting after all these years—even if you don’t think you’re interested in the war at all!”
Edward Ayers became president of the University of Richmond in 2007. There, he has overseen The Richmond Promise, an ambitious collaboration across the institution. That work has attracted record numbers of excellent applicants from around the nation and the world, inspired high levels of alumni involvement, initiated bold curricular innovation, and strengthened ties between the university and the city of Richmond.
Ayers has been named National Professor of the Year and won the Bancroft Prize for distinguished writing in American history, among many other awards. He maintains an active scholarly career, teaching first-year students at UR, speaking widely, collaborating with the University’s Digital Scholarship Lab, and co-hosting a nationally syndicated radio show, Back Story. A fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, Ayers serves on the boards of the American Council for Education, and a range of historical and community organizations in Richmond.

Hans York is a German-born, award-winning, internationally acclaimed performing songwriter that got his musical roots from being raised in occupied Germany. He is a consummate musician, traveling between folk, jazz, and pop effortlessly. The greatest joy with Hans York is not found by simply listening to his flawlessly produced albums; it is by watching and hearing him live. When Hans York walks onto a stage and embraces the audience with his warm, engaging smile, this begins an unforgettable evening of music and song.

Speaker Series: Colonial Herbs, Book Signing and Herb Sale

Marianne M. Ritchie, co-owner and co-founder of A Thyme to Plant Herb Farm, Inc. will discuss herbs grown and used in colonial times. Ms. Ritchie has lectured, conducted seminars and workshops, taught a class on herbs and held hands-on classes on “Gourmet Cooking with Herbs.” She has been a featured speaker at the Virginia Herb Association Conferences and at the International Herb Association Conference. Her book “Planning, Planting and Harvesting Your Herb Garden” has been compiled as a result of one of her most popular lectures and questions asked by clients and will be available for purchase. Herb plants will be for sale before and after the presentation.
Before and after the program the Restaurant is offering the following special menu items from Ms. Ritchie’s book:

Battles of Hanover Courthouse Bus Tour 12 pm - 5 pm
May 27th is the 150th anniversary of this battle. Join Robert E. L. Krick, historian for the National Park Service, and Michael C. Hardy, author, on a guided bus tour from Hanover Tavern that focuses on the 1862 Civil War battle in the Hanover Courthouse area. Prior to the bus tour, Mr. Hardy will speak about his book “Battle of Hanover Courthouse: Turning Point of the Peninsula Campaign, May 27, 1862”. Mr. Krick, a leading authority on Civil War history in Hanover County, will utilize knowledge gleaned from letters, diaries, and battle reports to provide a detailed account of individual units, camps, and troop movements during the battle. The guided tour includes stops at historic sites and homes that played a role in the battle as well as lunch at Hanover Tavern.
